Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
