Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
