"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple famous fans have openly petitioned for the position.

It's clear something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a close unit. Their visuals often feature them striding in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to form a group."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Historic Recognition

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes track breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That developed toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The band's candor shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

However Haim will forever be their number one commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
