The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
