Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
