A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
